Junior School

In the Junior School at Riverside all core subjects are taught by the child’s class teacher. Specialist lessons are taught by specialist subject teachers.

From Y1 to Y6, all children take part in the following timetabled lessons:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science
  • Topic (which incorporates Drama and Humanities i.e. Geography, History)
  • Physical Education (PE)
  • Art & Design
  • Design Technology (from Year 3 onwards)
  • Music
  • Thai Studies
  • Modern Foreign Language (from Y3 upwards), one of:
    • French
    • Japanese
    • Mandarin Chinese
    • Spanish
    • English Plus: for children who have been identified as benefiting from additional English Language support.

Senior School

Core Subjects

The following subjects are offered to IGCSE level, and taken by all students up to Y11:

  • English
    • English Language
    • English Literature
  • Mathematics (some students may also sit Further Mathematics IGCSE)
  • Sciences
    • Biology
    • Chemistry
    • Physics
    • Some students may take coordinated science instead of the individual sciences at GCSE
  • Learning for Life (continued by all to Y11, but not examined at IGCSE)
  • Physical Education (continued to Y11 for all, offered as IGCSE subject option in Y10/Y11)

Additional Subjects:

The following subjects are taken by all students up until the end of Y9, then continued as possible subject options to IGCSE:

  • Art & Design
  • Business Studies (offered from Y10)
  • Computing (in Y10 and Y11 Computer Science IGCSE)
  • Design Technology
  • Drama
  • Economics (offered from Y10)
  • Geography
  • History
  • Modern Foreign Languages (one of)
    • French
    • Japanese
    • Mandarin Chinese
    • Spanish
    • EAL students study "English Plus" instead of an MFL from Y7-9, and some students study "Academic Literacy" instead of an MFL in Y10/11
  • Music
  • Psychology (offered as GCSE option from Y10)
  • Religion, Philosophy and Ethics (offered as IGCSE option from Y10)
  • Thai Studies (Thai Nationals are required to continue language component in Y10 & Y11, where First Language is also offered as an IGCSE option )

Sixth Form

All subject options offered at IGCSE are also offered at A-level, except English Language; Thai Studies; Religion, Philosophy & Ethics; and Learning for Life (unexamined).

In addition, the following subjects form mandatory components of the Sixth Form Programme:

  • Reading the World
  • Sixth Form Studies
  • IELTS (for some students where English is not the First Language)
